Fortuna led the redesign and migration of a major European digital asset exchange's high-traffic prices API—responsible for serving billions of requests per day—to a more scalable backend architecture, enabling consistent performance during periods of extreme market volatility.

Problem

Between 2021–2023, a major European digital asset exchange faced severe performance challenges as institutional adoption accelerated. Market data traffic spiked unpredictably during periods of high trading activity—at times exceeding baseline load by more than 30×.

These volatility-driven surges resulted in:

  • Saturated compute resources
  • Elevated API response times
  • Service inconsistency across retail, institutional, and partner integrations

With rapidly expanding market access and multi-region infrastructure, the exchange's existing MongoDB-based architecture struggled to scale reliably under peak demand.

The organization required a modernization initiative that would:

  • Support a no-downtime migration of a critical live production system
  • Improve stability and performance during volatility-driven load bursts
  • Strengthen global availability and fault tolerance
  • Provide a scalable operational foundation for growing asset coverage and international expansion

This required precise orchestration and senior reliability engineering expertise.

Solution

Fortuna led a full redesign and migration of the exchange's pricing and market data API from a legacy monolithic storage model to a distributed DynamoDB-based architecture—executed live in production with zero disruption to customers.

Key activities included:

  • Scalable data model architecture: Designed an optimized DynamoDB schema supporting real-time price delivery and high-volume historical lookups.
  • Performance & load-aware tuning: Reduced query overhead and CPU/memory load through improved request shaping and indexing strategy.
  • Multi-region deployment: Rolled out deployments across multiple AWS regions to reduce latency and improve resilience against regional failure scenarios.
  • Operational uplift: Introduced observability improvements, modern monitoring pipelines, and actionable alerting thresholds aligned with SRE best practices.
  • Risk-mitigated rollout: Executed a phased migration with traffic shadowing, automated failback paths, and extensive performance testing prior to cutover.

The migration was completed without impact to live users or trading activity.
